Tod Williams Billie Tsien Architects : CAD/Application Support

Tod Williams Billie Tsien Architects designs are extremely well thought out. No detail is overlooked or thought of as being inconsequential to the overall design. The result is a portfolio of work that is clear and elegant but never overwrought. They consistently forgo fad and fashion for lasting integrity.

This philosophy shows itself in their network requirements as well. Working with Control Group, TWBTA have made informed decisions about what technologies will optimize their work flow and provide flexibility. Upgrades, additions, and new features are chosen carefully to provide more end user functionality and to avoid unnecessary complexity that could take focus from the work at hand.

Clearly, the design process at TWBTA demands a great deal of time and attention and, as a result, TWBTA requires a network that is as transparent as possible.

Initially, this meant designing a robust, self-contained network for a 20-person firm that could be remotely managed with little downtime. As TWBTA has grown, this task has evolved into maintaining that level of transparency in an office that has doubled in size. An increasing number of projects outside the United States has created a need for seamless electronic collaboration with overseas clients and consultants. In addition, functionalities such as remote access, electronic distribution of documents and teleconferencing are no longer a luxury for TWBTA but are expected necessities that demand maximum uptime.

TWBTA's production technology requirements are no less demanding. Control Group has helped implement a suite of software that includes Microsoft Office, AutoCAD, AutoCAD LT, Autodesk 3DVIZ and Adobe Creative Suite that is equally as transparent to the end user as the network infrastructure. In addition, all aspects of the system relating to office standards and shared information have been centralized so the experience is consistent from user to user and workstation to workstation, effectively eliminating hassles about licensing, version optimization, and installation.

The end result of Control Group's efforts is that fewer of TWBTA's resources are devoted to troubleshooting the myriad of issues that can arise in a poorly executed network. This time and effort can then be focused where it is most needed, in their design expertise.
